GETTING STARTED IN HIGH POWER ROCKETRY

Tripoli Rocketry Association of San Diego welcomes everyone to participate in the fun and exciting hobby of High Power Rocketry (HPR).  We generally launch on the first Saturday of the month when it is not too hot at our launch site in Imperial County.  See the Launch Calendar and Launch Site for details.

To keep our hobby safe there are skills one must learn to fly HPR.  In designing and building a rocket one must determine its stability, include motor retention, add vent holes, and use rail guides (not launch lugs).  When selecting and preparing a motor the initial thrust to total rocket weight ratio must be considered.  Also the delay before ejection of the parachute must be determined and set in the motor delay element.  Recovery of the rocket starts with protecting the shock cord and parachute from the hot ejection gases, using non-elastic shock cords, and learning how to pack a parachute.  All these skills are necessary to learn to prevent a rocket from returning to earth so fast that it has the potential to injure people or cause property damage.

There are experienced club members happy to help newcomers learn these skills.  But first follow this link to the Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) website and read some more about Getting Started in High Power Rocketry:
